I have been around dogs for all of my life, I was brought up in a family that always had pets and amongst ponies, rabbits, guinea pigs and cats we always had dogs.
Having wanted a Malamute since childhood but only really knowing them through books and occasional sightings, I got my first real taster of them when Stuart and I visited Barbara at the Arctictrek kennel in 1990.
We agreed that we had to have one in our family but we decided that due to our work and travel commitments at that time we should wait.
We were finally in a position to offer a stable home to a Malamute when I started working from home, after completing our research we joined lists in early 1999 and waited …… The wait finally came to an end in 2001 when Indy came to join us. We originally had hoped for just one pet Mal, but before the wait was over and while spectating at shows for a couple of years, we thought it would be a good idea to enter this world.
Once we owned one Malamute we soon realised that having one just really wasn’t enough and since broadening our interest in sled dogs in general we found we were also drawn to the Greenland Dog, hence we are now the proud owners of a growing mixed pack of Mals & Greenlands.
As mentioned I show most of our dogs, all to great success including owning/bred 4 x KC Stud Book numbers, however we are not a show kennel and this only forms a small part of our activities with our dogs. Some of our dogs have a total lack of interest in showing and we never push our dogs to do something they do not enjoy. The dogs all enjoy recreational runs in harness, we also have panniers and backpack with them around some lovely walks and have earned 2 x WTD titles & 4 x WPD titles. We are just starting out with weight pull training and plan to work towards WWPD titles in the future. We attend an agility class with two dogs every week and have competed in agility shows with Onyx. All of our dogs are exercised daily, we alternate with road walking, free running in our 2 acre paddock, biking & working each day to keep them content.
We firmly believe in learning about your chosen breed before going on to breed litters yourself. There are far too many breeders that are planning litters before they have the knowledge and experience to help and guide new owners. We have noticed an increase in people planning litters before they have even brought up dogs of each sex to adulthood, these are the breeders that are compounding the lack of knowledge in these magnificent, but sometimes difficult breeds. Having owned Malamutes since 2001 and Greenlands since 2003 and although we are always learning, we feel we have enough understanding of these breeds to help new owners to overcome any difficulties. We are very privileged to be able to count experienced, knowledgeable, stalwarts of these breeds with 20+ years as amongst our close friends, who continue to guide us. We bred our first Malamute litter in 2007, our second in 2009 and our third in 2011. We bred our first Greenland Dog litter in 2010. We are listed on the AMCUK & GDCGB breeders list and are KC assured breeders.
We attended the Alaskan Malamute National and Specialty shows and seminars in America in 2002 & 2008, two judging seminars held here in 2004 and one in 2005, 2006 & 2008 to further our knowledge and experience of the breed. We also attended the Greenland Dog seminar held in 2004. I have also attended & passed several KC seminars. I attended the first of the AMCUK health seminars in 2009, as it is of great importance to us to breed healthy dogs.
I currently serve on the Greenland Dog Club of Great Britain’s committee in the position of Treasurer and Membership Secretary. I also served on the Alaskan Malamute Club of United Kingdom’s committee for two years achieving too many accomplishments to list, to much acclaim from the members (including fostering two dogs for 4 months). I am the Greenland Dog breed note writer for the “Dog World” weekly newspaper and the European Area reporter for the AMCA. Stuart is currently serving on the Greenland Dog Club of Great Britain’s committee in the position of Secretary. Stuart also served on the Alaskan Malamute Club of United Kingdom’s committee for two years, running the KCGC scheme amongst many other duties, to which he received much membership admiration. Stuart is the Greenland Dog breed note correspondent for the “Our Dogs” weekly newspaper. We are both Kennel Club associate members. I am on the B (breed specialist) judging list for both Alaskan Malamutes and Greenland Dogs. Stuart is on the B list (breed specialist) judging list for Greenland Dogs. We are both on the Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society Dog Show committee.
We would like to thank all of the breeders of our dogs for allowing us to home them.
Thank you for taking the time to visit our website dedicated to the two breeds that we love, we hope you enjoy it.
